Dev-Team Releases Jailbreak – PwnageTool 3.1.4

The Dev-Team has released a jailbreak for firmware 3.1.2. The jailbreak (PwnageTool 3.1.4) works for the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS. It also work on the 1G and 2G iPod touch. It does not support the 3G iPod touch at this time. PwnageTool only works on a Mac (no Windows version yet).

If you are an unlocker, “It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband. For those who have been onboard the “unlock train”, simply install ultrasn0w via Cydia once you’ve restored to your custom IPSW. Don’t forget to turn off the “3G” setting in Settings->General->Network if you use T-Mobile in the U.S.A.”

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G/2G 3.1 Firmware on Windows

Earlier today iPhone Dev-team released Pwnage Tool 3.1 which lets Jailbreak iPhone 3.1 Firmware but that only works on Mac OS X but wait is over now for Windows users aswell No, dev team haven’t released redsn0w so far but my dear friend Saad has shared a custom IPSW for firmware 3.1 which you can use on your Windows PC to update and jailbreak iPhone 3G/2G.

This custom made 3.1 firmware comes with Apple logo and Cydia. So now follow the step below to jailbreak.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G Firmware 3.1

1. First Download the following links of custom iPhone 3.1 Firmware
2. Now join all the downloaded parts using HJSplit and you will get one archive, uncompress that archive and it contains IPSW file of firmware 3.1 Custom iPhone 3G 3.1 Firmware Part 1 Custom iPhone 3G 3.1 Firmware Part 2 Custom iPhone 3G 3.1 Firmware Part 3

SBSetting Volume MC - Change Volume Buttons to Media Controls

SBSetting Volume MC is a SBSettings toggle that turns your volume control into iPod controller. Once installed, the app is added to SBSetting (you may need to go into the More/Set Toggles options and turn it on). When it is activated, it turns your volume control on the side of your device into a controller for your iPod allowing you to scroll through your songs.

If you tap the volume up button on your volume control, it will go forward a song. If you tap the volume down button, it will go back a song. If you quickly tap the up and then the down button on your volume control it will pause the song. You can then either tap the up or down button to start the song again. One thing I like about this app is that it starts your iPod when you tap up or down. You do not have to go into your iPod start your music and then the app works. You can use SBSetting Volume MC to start your music.

The only problem I have with this app is that I am so used to using my volume control for my volume that I keep accidentally changing my song when really I want to adjust the volume. If you are going to use the SBSetting Volume MC app, I would suggest also installing the Volume Slider Widget. It is a SBSetting toggle as well which allows you to have an easy way to adjust your volume.

One thing that would be nice is if you held the volume button down, it affected the volume. So, instead of just a quick tap on the volume button to change the song, if you held down the volume up button, it would turn up the volume. Or maybe if you held the volume button up or down, it would fastward or rewind the song. That would be cool too….either one I guess!

MusicInfo - Display Song Title, Artist and Album in Status Bar

I guess I’m on some sort of iPod kick today so, here is another cool app for you. MusicInfo is a mod that quickly displays a song’s info in your status bar.

Once installed, when you switch to a new song, you will get a quick five second overlay on your status bar that displays the song title, artist and album.

This mod will work anywhere in which the status bar is visible. It also comes in two colors; black and white (installed separately). Also, this a code app so you will not see an icon on your SpringBoard. It is not activated/deactivated via WinterBoard. If you would like to remove the mod, you will need to uninstall it in Cydia.

EA Mobile has released The Sims 3 game for the iPhone and iPod touch community. Play with the lives of your Sims using touch and accelerometer controls while exploring the 3D neighborhood. Customize their looks & personality. Give them big browns or baby blues. Cover their head in curls or have them sport a mohawk. Make them Neurotic, Funny, or Shy.

Choose their career. Take them fishing. Watch as they fall in love. Great graphics, even with zooming, you can also make expansion and modification to a home. Some features of the PC version have been removed however in the iPhone version.

Overall a great iPhone game for any SIMS fan.

MobileNavigator

Just as TomTom announed its coming iPhone app with the impending release of iPhone OS 3.0 June 17th, Navigon is readying their MobileNavigator software to take full advantage of the firmware updates to turn the iPhone into a full GPS navigation device. By the end of the month, Navigon wants iPhone users to be able access MobileNavigator from the AppStore internationally.

The MobileNavigator software will be compatible with both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S which will guide their users safely to their destination - with update map material and intelligent navigation.

MobileNavigator will include functions such as Reality View Pro, Real Roadsign Pro, Lane Assistant Pro, Speed Assistant, Day & Night Mode, with additional functions such as displaying Points of Interest (POIs). The software will be able to rotate 90 degrees and switch seemlessly between portrait and landscape mode. Navigon has integrated the software with other functions of the iPhone such as navigation to an address through a saved contact on the phone itself. If interrupted by a phone call, instead of closing the application, MobileNavigator will resume once the call is ended, automatically.

A price tag hasn’t been issued (but will be by the AppStore launch) for MobileNavigator but a ‘LITE’ version will be available for free from the AppStore. MobileNavigator LITE won’t have active route guidance, but will display map material and Points of Interests nearby.

Firmware 3.0 - No Jailbreak Yet, Hold Off On Upgrading

BigBoss posted an article today stating that there is currently no jailbreak for firmware 3.0 (the real thing, not the betas). Yes, you can use the 3.0 b5 jailbreak tools but, it’s not advised. Below is what BigBoss has to say on the matter.

As for the rest of us who are not on firmware 3.0 yet, they will probably have it jailbroke before we even get it on June 17th. However, even if they do have it jailbroke by the release date, there is rumor that many of the jailbreak apps will not work on firmware 3.0. Doug says apps like WinterBoard, WeatherIcon, LiveClock, Cycorder do not work on firmware 3.0 b5. So, on June 17th, you might want to hold off on upgrading until we can figure out how everything works. We will keep you up-to-date.

“Yes, 3.0 GM is released to developers. This is the final 3.0 release. There is no jailbreak for it at this time. Do not yet upgrade. There are rumors of people using the 3.0 b5 jailbreak tools. This is a terrible idea. It will replace most your 3.0GM with B5 components. You will not have a real 3.0 final any longer, instead you will have a hybrid 3.0 and beta 5. It’s a terrible idea. Next week when beta 5 expires, your 3.0 jailbreak could expire as well and you would have to restore all over again.Yes, some people may claim that they did this and “it works fine”. But as I just stated, it is not a real 3.0 final any longer. Definitely not a good idea nor is this something you want.

Just wait a few days and you should be ok.”

11 Page SpringBoard on Firmware 3.0

One feature of the 3.0 firmware that is pretty cool is that you can now have 11 pages of applications on your SpringBoard instead of the previous 9 pages (screenshot below). Which means you can now have 180 applications at your fingertips where previously you could only have 150.

I know some of you probably use Categories so you do not use all 9 pages anyway but, for those people who are not jailbroke…it might be a nice feature of the new firmware. Though, I have found that the more apps I install the slower my iPhone gets but, I might be able to blame that on the jailbroke apps.

WWDC Live Blog Tomorrow - New 4g iPhone

Tomorrow is the big day! As you can see on the right, there are only a few hours left until the big announcement. What’s going to be announced? Well, I have my opinions…

I’m pretty confident that the name of the 3rd iPhone will be called “iPhone Video”. There’s strong evidence in the iPhone 3.0 Beta firmwares to support this:

This screenshot seems pretty real to me. It would make total sense to have one app run both the still image camera and the video camera. Just toggling the switch into video mode would change the button to a red dot kinda like the red light on the front of most video cameras.

There’s a lot more that goes along with video, one of the best is a new camera/lens. A big rumor is an upgrade to the camera to 3.2MP and the addition of auto focus. This would be really nice for me because right now I carry a DSLR and a Flip Video along with my iPhone. I would like the iPhone to replace the Flip. I doubt it will ever replace the big digital camera. I NEED ZOOM!

Other screenshots show MobileMe video features and even one with buttons that allow for minor editing of the video right on the iPhone. A big wish of mine is the front facing camera to make video phone calls. This seems to good to be true. Maybe someday with the 4G/LTE network. I really do think there will be video recording with the new iPhone.

There are rumors of physical changes to the device too. One is replacement of the chrome bezel to black. I’m not sure why Apple would do this. Both first iPhones have the chrome. Not really a big deal to me but I guess it’s false. Another thing I don’t think is going to happen is the rubberized back. I used to have a incase rubber case for my iPhone, and while it did help me hold onto he iPhone, it made it hard to get in and out of my pocket. I think Apple will continue to resort to cases to allow the user to customize them.

There are all kinds of rumors flying around about the price of the next set of iPhones. The biggest one is a $99 4GB model. This would be a big seller for the device, but the monthly plan is the bigger concern too. There are, of course, rumors about the data plans becoming cheaper too. I think the $99 iPhone is very likely (with a 2 year contract of course). Data plans changing would be nice, but anything less than unlimited SMS/MMS and Data are not going to happen with me.

Standard feature upgrades like more battery life, speed, memory, storage, OS update all seem expected.

Some final features for our list may be good ideas, but I just don’t see happening. They include a glowing Apple logo on the back, dedicated shutter button, background running apps, Adobe flash, 802.11n, FM Transmitter and a compass. How about the return of Steve Jobs? (also a rumor)
I’m sure there are more and more but we’ll get to that tomorrow. We’ll be live blogging all the info we can get, tomorrow, noon central time. Goodnight, sweet dreams.

SixRows - Six Rows on Your SpringBoard (Seven Counting the Dock)

SixRows is a mod that allows you to have six rows of icons on your SpringBoard. Technically it is seven rows of icons if you include the dock. There is currently already a mod that allows you to have five rows of icons (six including the dock) called FiveIrows. There is also another mod allowing for five columns on your SpringBoard called FCSB. So, I guess SixRows just gives you one more option for modding your iPhone or iPod Touch exactly they way you would like it.

When you install SixRows, your device will respring and you will instantly have six (seven) rows on your SpringBoard. This mod can not be activated/deactivated via WinterBoard. Also, because the SixRows mod really squishes your icons together, it does not display the icon titles (they are overlapped by the next row of icons). So, unless the theme is designed specifically for the SixRows mod, you will probably want to turn your icon labels off via WinterBoard.

I was able to install and uninstall SixRows with no problem. It is most likely not a mod that I am going to use…unless I run across a theme designed specifically for it. Let me know in the comments what you think and whether this is a mod you are going to use or not.

eBay Mobile 1.3 Update

eBay Mobile has recently updated to version 1.3. Lots of new features, a big one, leaving feedback for sellers and buyers.

There’s also a link to see a seller’s other items. This is nice when you find something you’re looking for and want to see what else the seller might have. You could not do this before. Another of my favorite features of this update is the ability to see search results for more than 100 items. Usually you would search and 25 items would appear in the list with a link to load 25 more. After 100 loaded it would stop searching. Now it goes on and on!
Along with this big features there are other minor things like a link to the eBay support page and support for the new 3.0 firmware.

Falling Balls

Falling Balls is a super minimalistic black & white iPhone game where you are a tiny little stick figure character and run away from giant falling balls to avoid being crushed to death. Tilt the iPhone left and right in landscape mode and your stick figure guy runs.

Balls make a funny sound as they bounce on the ground. At first there are only a few balls dropping but the game picks up momentum and an array of balls start dropping in various sizes and at different speeds, making Falling Balls a fun and simple little iPhone game. Give it s shot for yourself, its free and quite addictive.

And avoid getting splattered into a puddle of blood.

iCam for iPhone

iCam is an iPhone app that enables live webcam video streaming of up to 4 webcam video and audio feeds from anywhere in the world to your iPhone or iPod touch over WiFi, 3G and EDGE.

iCam works with any MAC or PC. After you buy and install iCam on your iPhone or iPod touch, you need to install the iCamSource software on your computer. iCamSource recognizes your connected webcam and from there you just have to pick a username and password. Then open up your iCam app and re-enter the same username and password into the app. Once connected you will see a the main page of iCam where you see 4 cam windows, with the cam you connected to. Tap any cam to zoom in on it, and double tap zoom out. iCam can deliver both audio and video to your iPhone, but you can choose to turn off audio if you like. iCam is a wonderfully powerful iPhone app for monitoring you home, office, baby, or any place you want, quickly and easily.

New iPhone 4G Releases July 17, 2009

iPhones rumors are nevertheless hyped as any celebrity scandals. And the latest to hit the rumor mills is of a new iPhone ‘ready to go on sale’ as early as July 17, 2009. Now, you call that another rumor that would soon bite the dust or the tight-lipped policy of Apple Inc. to leak, yet step back from spilling the beans altogether. The seeds of this rumor might be linked to the fact that Apple Inc. might like to follow its tradition of releasing a new iPhone version mid-summer every year.

The tongues went wagging and the news spread like wildfire, when rumors spilled from a post in AppleiPhoneApps.com revealing a possible third generation iPhone release. The post even cited a possible date - Friday, July 17, 2009, quoting ‘inside sources’ from Apple development team. The website has also quoted that the present price tags of $199 and $299 will remain.

New iPhone Specifications - What to expect

There are also reports of a few changes in the external look of the new iPhone. Apart from reports of the metal band around the edge of the device ‘gone missing’, the new device is believed to have a comparatively sleeker design with a rubber-tread backing.

Moreover, the rear of the phone will also sport a glowing Apple logo.

The new iPhone is stated to offer 32GB storage capacity.

Although there is no confirmation yet on the price, rumors are rife that the 16GB and 32GB storage is priced at $199 and $299 respectively.

The short battery life in the current iPhone version is believed to be one of the bigger flaws in this highly popular device. The battery life of the new iPhone is believed to be 1.5 times greater than the original Palm Pre

Apart from doubling of the RAM to 256MB, the processor speed is also expected to be twice as fast from the current 412MHz clock speed to 600MHz. iPhone enthusiasts are hopeful about the inclusion of background processing too.

Possible inclusion of 3.2-megapixel camera, for taking clear pictures; along with functions like video-recording and editing.

The new iPhone with iPhone 3.0 software update will most likely allow iPhone users send pictures and videos via MMS.

Built-in FM transmitter is probably one of the most anticipated features to look forward in the new iPhone. Another expected feature is the OLED screen.

• Another enviable feature in the new iPhone is said to be that of a built-in compass and the GPS, camera, compass and Google map combined will functions like ‘identify photo’ and ‘inform about photo locations’.

• The new device allowing turn-by-turn directions is another feature iPhone users are looking up to.

Confirmation expected...

All eyes are now set on Monday, June 8, 2009 for further details on the new iPhone when Apple Inc. Vice President Phil Schiller will give out a keynote address at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WDC) in San Francisco. While another theory doing the rounds related to the release of the new iPhone is in anticipation of Apple’s affinity to schedule significant releases in the magic month of July. And analysts are hopeful that a formal announcement is on the cards following the return of CEO Steve Jobs to Apple Inc.

Industry analysts are optimistic that release of the new iPhone would drive demand as it has on other release of the earlier versions. Although, IPhone sales represent about 11% of Apple's last quarterly revenue, and the Q1 report for the current shows a 123% rise in sales, the new iPhone is expected to steer the smartphone giant clear out of recession blues. And the results are already showing on the Apple Inc. shares, which have risen 43% until now this year, somewhat in anticipation of Apple releasing a new iPhone sometime this year.

iTunes Update to version 8.2

Apple started pushing out their official iTunes 8.2, which supports mobile devices at firmware 3.0. Here’s why you jailbreakers and yellowsn0w-users shouldn’t really accept that “Update now?” question:

•Most people aren’t at 3.0. In fact 3.0 is still in beta and has lots of bugs (especially related to push updates).
•It breaks your ability to use QuickPwn, PwnageTool, and iPhone Tunneling Suite (ssh over usb). We don’t think this is a deliberate breakage of these tools. It’s just that Apple has updated a low-level USB protocol that normally only Apple cares about (but jailbreakers care about).
•So far, the only appreciable change to iTunes 8.2 is the Genius function working on videos.
•It may actually break Palm Pre’s connection to the device (please give us feedback on this).
This update is one of those that incidentally breaks QuickPwn and PwnageTool. It doesn’t seem like an anti-jailbreak. But nonetheless, it will break your ability to re-run QuickPwn or PwnageTool’s dfu-entry.

Because this update isn’t a deliberate anti-jailbreak measure, it’s easily fixed in our tools. But we really don’t want to update our tools until 3.0 is out, so please don’t update to 8.2 if you think you’ll need to rejailbreak your device. :)

YellowSn0w on 2.2.1 and beyond

We see many questions about whether yellowsn0w can ever be made to work on firmware versions past 2.2 (or equivalently, basebands past 02.28). This is probably a good place to address those questions:

If there is a yellowsn0w update for firmware after 2.2 (or basebands after 02.28), there is no way it would ever be released before 3.0 is official. It just wouldn’t make any sense to release an exploit for something that only those who have beta 3.0’s (NDA signers) could use. Most people in the world aren’t NDA signers. Any yellowsn0w update for 3.0 would need to happen *after* 3.0 is officially available.

Tweetie - client for the iPhone

For me, this is the best Twitter client for the iPhone. I know people really like others, like Twitterrrific, but I still vote for Tweetie. You can easily set up and access mulitiple Twitter account. There are three different themes to the layout and design of the app, which is huge for me because I like the dark theme.

You can easily access your main stream, @replies, direct messages and favorites from the main screen. The more tab, of course, has even more features like access to your own profile, go to user, nearby, trends, search and you can save your searches. You can post pictures or your location in tweets. Under a users profile you can reply, direct message, follow, stop following, see recent tweets, see recent replies to that user, see who they are following and who’s following them, and block or unblock.

The best feature of all for me is the ability to customize the app like changing the theme, and the way your retweets look.

Can’t live without music? The Last.fm iPhone App lets you listen to free streaming radio on the go on your iPhone or iPod touch. Last.fm has a long history of web based music streaming and now comes to your iPhone and iPod touch. The idea is very simple. Just search for an artist you like and Last.fm creates a radio station based on that artist, and similar ones in the same genre with the matching styles. If you don’t already have an account you can create one on the iPhone the first time you launch the Lasf.fm app.

The power of Last.fm is in the community. For example if an artist is currently on tour, the player shows an “On Tour” band around the album cover in the iPhone player. PhotoList Update - Facebook Integration

I opened iTunes this evening and what did I see? An update to an app that I had done a review on last week. It was the PhotoList app by Raisix Inc. I was interested to see what they had updated and I was hoping it wasn’t just stability issues as most updates are. But to my surprise they had added a new feature to the app…Facebook integration!! Now that is cool.

The Facebook integration allows you to do two things: Upload and Download photos to and from your personal Facebook account.

To Download
Within PhotoList, create a new folder that you want to download pics from your Facebook account. Tap on your new created folder and tap the folder icon at the bottom right of the screen. Tap “Facebook” on the “Download photo from” title and after it requests authorization, sign into your Facebook account. Once you have done this tap “Done” and start downloading from any of your Facebook photo folders. Once you have selected your photo, name it or keep the default name and give it your 1 to 5 rating (if you want), and tap “Done”. Once you are done, tap the Facebook arrow and then cancel to take you back to the PhotoList app.

To Upload
Within one of your folders in PhotoList, tap the pic that you want to upload. At the bottom left is a foward icon. Tap “Facebook” on the “Upload photo to” title and after your sign in or authorize, tap “Upload”. The photo will upload to a default PhotoList folder that has now been created on your Facebook page. You will be given a “success” message once the photo is uploaded and hit “Done” to go back to PhotoList.

The only problem with this is that you have to then sign into your Facebook account from your computer to approve the photo before it will post to your account for others to view. PhotoList might want to look into building a Facebook Application as well to compliment this new feature.

This app is totally worth the $$$ now!!!! Maybe Flickr, Picasa Web, and MySpace integration next?

Round and Round - WinterBoard Theme

Round and Round is a theme that consists of transparent round icons. Unlike the popular Glass Orb theme, Round and Round adds a bit of color with a colored graphic inside of each transparent circle. Honestly, I feel like I have seen these icons before but, I can’t come up with the name of the theme so maybe they are just similar to another theme’s icons.

Round and Round only contains the basic 16 icons and a Cydia icon (no iTunes and App Store icons with this one), a dock and a wallpaper. However, the wallpaper is a little too crazy for me…I went with a plain black wallpaper.

Silent Mail Sound - Turn Your Mail Sound Notification into a Vibrate Notification

Silent Mail Sound is a mod that will turn off your mail notification sound but, will still have your device vibrate when you receive a new email. I’m not really sure why you would need this mod. I guess if you do not want to put your entire iPhone into vibrate mode but, you still want to know when you receive an email without the sound notification…then you might use this mod!

When you install Silent Mail Sound, it is added to WinterBoard where it is then activated/deactivated. In order for the mod to work, your New Mail sound notification (located in your Setting application under Sounds, New Mail) must be turned on. However, once you activate the Silent Mail Sound mod in WinterBoard, it will automatically disable the sound and replace it with vibrate. If you have the New Mail sound notification turned off in your stock Settings application, the Silent Mail Sound mod will not work.

I’m not sure that I can think of a scenario in which this would be used….maybe during a business meeting? But, wouldn’t you have your entire iPhone on vibrate during a business meeting? Let me know in the comments if you can think of a reason for this mod.

Tricker ThreeG is a mod that allows the SlingPlayer Mobile application (available via the App Store for $29.99) to work on not only WiFi but also on 3G. It is not very often that I write about an application/mod/hack that I cannot test but, I know that allowing SlingPlayer Mobile to work on 3G is something a lot of people want. If you you own a SB, have purchased the SlingPlay Mobile application and have installed this hack…let us know how it is working for you! It would be pretty sweet if it actually works.

The Tricker ThreeG apps also says that it works with Skype and Fring.

Email ‘N Walk is a controversial app developed by phase2games that sets the iPhone’s Email compose window background to the live feed from your iPhone camera lens. The idea is that you can walk and type email messages on your iPhone at the same time if you can see what is in front of you. The app lets you type the subject and the body of the email, and once you tap on Send, it takes that information and puts it into the Mail app where you have to choose a contact to send the email to. One issue we had was that even though the app shows the video feed, it is very shaky and hard to focus on as you are walking.

Using a phone while driving is extremely dangerous and also against the law in many states.

Blokt - Puzzle Game

If you like puzzle games as much as I do, I’m pretty sure you’ll love Blokt. Blokt is a game where there are several different sized rectangles in the way of the red rectangle.

The goal is to clear the way for the red to exit the box that the rest are in. The blocks that are pointing up and down can only move up and down and the blocks that are pointing side to side can only move side to side.

The concept is pretty simple but then again, so is a rubix cube! That’s pretty much it… there are really no settings to speak of and as far as I can tell everything is pretty self explanatory.

Twidget - View Tweets on Lock Screen

Twidget is a sweet application that allows you to view tweets on your lock screen. When you install Twidget, it will add an icon to your SpringBoard. When you launch the app, you will need to enter your Twitter info. Next, you will need to go into WinterBoard and activate Twidget.

Once you have entered your info and activated Twidget via WinterBoard, you can lock your iPhone or iPod Touch. You should see a menu bar with the options; Friends, Own, Replies, Favorite and Refresh. You will also see a bar indicating that your tweets are loading. The first time it took quite a while for my tweets to load acutally, I ended up deactivating and reactivating it in WinterBoard and then it went. Once your tweets load, you are able to view your most recent 10 tweets by your Friends, your own tweets, your @ replies and your favorites. You can also refresh the tweets using the refresh option. Sometimes it refreshed really quickly, other times it took a while….usually it is pretty quick.

This application is strictly for viewing your tweets. You cannot respond to tweets, post a tweet, click on links that are in the tweets…etc. I would love to see an update that keeps the lock screen on longer. For now, you can install the 20 Second Lock Screen mod via the BigBoss source. But, it would be nice if the application had a longer delay or stayed on while you were viewing tweets and then re-locked when you were finished.

Overall, a pretty sweet application for all your Twitter addicts!

Numerus - Scientific Calculator

As a math and science teacher, I do a fair share of tutoring to make some additional income. I often carry my trusty TI-83 Plus (special edition blue, baby!) with me, but there have been several times when all I had was my iPhone. I will admit that the included iPhone calculator makes for a pretty decent substitute, and I get my scientific calculator functions when I rotate to landscape mode. However, there remained some functionality that was to be desired, and having a one-line display seems to remind me of the difference between a TI-30 and its bigger cousin, TI-83.

When sitting side to side with my TI-83 Plus, Numerus clearly has fewer buttons and no graphing capabilities. However, the app does pack in a decent number of buttons and their corresponding math functions. Numerus offers a multi-line display so you can see previous calculations right above your current calculation. All of the regular calculator functions along with those normally found on a standard scientific calculator are displayed on the iPhone screen in portrait mode. Different modes (degrees, radians, grad), along with a catalog of math functions exist. A “2nd” button allows you to choose other functions that don’t have a dedicated button, similar to what you would see on any commercial scientific calculator.

As mentioned above, Numerus contains most if not all of the functions that I would use while tutoring. It is equivalent to a $15 scientific calculator, but so is the built-in iPhone scientific calculator. What separates Numerus is that it works in portrait mode and has a multi-line display. The multi-line display is a big plus when compared to the built-in calculator. I love being able to see prior calculations, and the scroll function is a nice feature. Once loaded (there is a 3-4 second delay when starting the program, Numerus is very fast, and I like that it saved the last viewable calculations that you made should you leave the program. An interesting feature is the option to email your calculation history, which I did with ease, so this was kind of nice.

Unfortunately, not all was squeaky-clean, as the application did not respond well when I pressed a button multiple times, and during one trial, the app would not start up again until I reinstalled it entirely. Not even a hard reset seemed to fix the problem.

Numerus can best be described as a promising application that has the potential to displace the native scientific calculator. With graphing capabilities (I picked up the nicely designed Graphing Calculator for free awhile ago…), Numerus could have been a contender for the calculator app of choice. Unfortunately, it seems that some stability issues and a lack of frequent updates could ultimately doom this app. Should the developer release an update and add more functions, a brighter design, and graphing options, this app might be worth its $1.99 price tag. Until then, I would recommend other free or $0.99 options that seem to be more complete at this time.

iPhone and iPod touch: What to do when applications close unexpectedly while in use

The following tips may help if this issue occurs and may help prevent these behaviors in the future.

Turn iPhone or iPod touch off and on and then reopen the application you were using. To turn the iPhone or iPod touch off and on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of device for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
With Safari, try to minimize the number of pages/browser windows that are open on the device by closing the Safari windows that are not being used.
Avoid opening or surfing as web sites that have a lot of large images that need to be downloaded or rendered with Safari.
When not needed, turn Traffic Status OFF in Maps (Tap Maps, tap the Eye icon (in the lower right corner), and then tap Hide Traffic).
Use iTunes to update to the latest version of the iPhone or iPod touch software.
Additional Information

This symptom is not a hardware issue with the iPhone or iPod touch and replacing or repairing the device will not solve the issue.

QuickLock - SpringBoard One Tap Lock Option

QuickLock is an application that allows you to lock you iPhone or iPod Touch with one tap on your SpringBoard. When you install QuickLock, it will add an icon to your SpringBoard. When you tap on the icon your device will go into lock mode. I was surprised at how quickly it locked my iPhone. I was expecting some sort of delay when I taped the icon but, it immediately locked my device.

Honestly, I’m not really sure why you would need this app but, to each his own! Actually, if you are someone who is going to use this mod…let me know in the comments why you decided to…I’m interested to know.

Chimera - Add Filters and Effects to Your Photos

Chimera is a photo application that allows you to add filters to either previously existing photos in your Camera Roll or take a fresh photo and apply these filters right away. In all there are about 11 different filters (12 if you count the “NONE” filter as an option). These filters include; Quantize, Airbrush, Edges, Inverse, Saturate, Cartoon, Trace, Grayscale, Sepia, Night Vision, and Predator. One nice thing about this app is that once you save an image you can change the filter and save another version of the same image.

There are a bunch of various settings in Chimera… there are 3 different modes; delay settings, image stabilization, and facial recognition. The modes change how Chimera takes the pictures… it will either show you a preview, save the image instantly, or do a continuous burst mode where it will just take picture after picture until you tell it to stop. The other settings are pretty self explanatory. I’m not sure exactly what benefit the facial recognition feature does… it might be some type of auto focus function but really the depth of field on the iPhone camera is pretty great as it is. There are also a few automatic color functions such as auto white balance and a high contrast setting.

Overall, Chimera is a pretty cool app and I could see a practicality for several of the filters however, I don’t see the purpose of the night vision or the predator filters. One thing I don’t really like is the filter preview which is turn on and off by the magnifying glass next to the settings button in the bottom right. This function shows you what the image will look like with the selected filter but it makes it hard to see the full image that you are taking so I prefer to leave it off.

Firmware 3.0 Preview: Stocks

First, the Stocks application gets a new icon. It’s not a total redesign, but they did take off the labels at the bottom of the graph in the icon. Also, the design of the line on the graph has more of a sharp line than curvy. Most of the app is still the same but there are some valuable new features. When tapping on the stock’s units on the right, in green or red, you now get a third option. Not only do you get the percentage and price change, but you get the Mkt Cap. Best of all, there’s a nice new landscape view. It’s a big, full screen graph like the small one in portrait view.

Overall, a great update to a simple app from Apple.

Nintaii - “Brain Twisting Puzzle Game”

If you like games that challenge your thinking skills then you will like Nintaii. In this game you navigate a rectangular block through a maze until you get it to fall in a hole on the other side of the map. You can use you finger to roll the block through the maze or you can also use the accelerometer and tilt your iPhone/iPod Touch. There are 100 levels and obviously they get more challenging as you go along.

They also introduce little tools as the game goes on to either assist you or make the game more challenging…I haven’t decided. The tools in the levels I’ve made it to so far are an arrow that pushes the block in the direction that the arrow is pointing and then they have these sprocket squares that when you land the block on them vertically, it either pushes the corresponding sprocket cubes down flat or puts them back up to where they were before (I kinda messed up on the screenshot on this feature but once you try it out you’ll understand what I mean).

I think for the most part everything works fine in this app… I haven’t had any trouble with any of the controls and everything seems to be working the way it should. All in all this is a pretty sweet app.

SmsTool - Sms forwarding app for the iPhone via Cydia (Free)

SmsTool is another sms app which allows you to forward messages from your iPhone. The app is good and pretty stable. However there are quite a few features missing in this app. But there is a mention about the coming updates on this app which would make this app equipped with all the features.

The app has the feature to forward messages as email or as an sms. But it uses the default sms app to do this. It redirects you to the default sms or mail app when you press the ‘forward’ or ‘forward as email’ button. It also has the option to reply or call the contact in the Options Menu at the bottom-left. Another feature this app has is search. You can search an sms by the text or the name. It also has four folders namely inbox,sent drafts and templates.

However I do not prefer using this app as it lacks many features like single sms deletion, smileys, landscape viewing etc. Though they are expected to come out in the next update. Overall the app is descent but I still prefer usinf iRealSms or even Clippy as they are far more better compared to SmsTool. But this app is free as against the paid ones like iRealSms, MySms or even BiteSms.

PhotoList - Organize Images in Folders

PhotoList by Raisix Inc. has released an iPhone app that allows you to “rate your photos on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, and then sort by either rating or name when looking through photo folders.”

I really like how this app allows me to create as many folders as I want for all of my pics. Once I create a folder I can then add pics to this folder by selecting the “+” sign at the bottom left of the screen. That will bring up your Camera Roll from within the app so you don’t have to worry about closing the app to put your pics into your folder. Once you have selected your pic, you have to name it and have the option to rate it. I wish however instead of having to give a name to a photo that it would default to the actual “IMG_***” title already assigned to the photo. Minor but that way I don’t have to create a name in the case of fast filing.

Once back into your folder you can then organize by rating or by name. You can also view the photo in portrait or landscape mode (I was very impressed with this as I haven’t seen many apps that utilize the accelerometer that isn’t a game.) To view more pics just flick the photo to the left or right. This app doesn’t utilize the option to zoom which would be cool.

I also checked out a review by a user in the App Store and he was disgruntled that all you could do was file photos. He must have been looking for a mobile iPhoto app and this isn’t the app for that. This is a very basic app for filing.

I my opinion this is a great app for what it does. It is compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch. It does require the 2.2.1 software update.

Firmware 3.0 Preview: YouTube

A lot of people have been having trouble getting YouTube to work during the Beta process of the iPhone 3.0 firmware. With the 3rd beta, most have claimed it works again. Now that it does, we can show you what’s new so far. First, when seeing the details of a video, the info isn’t displayed right under the video thumbnail any more. You must tap the blue arrow which will bring you to a screen with two options, Info or More Videos. These tabs have a lot more features than before like rating, commenting and flagging videos. You can also see all the other comments on the video which you couldn’t do before. The More Video tab shows you more videos by the same user and the option to subscribe to that users videos.

When viewing lists of videos, such as the Most Viewed tab, the title of videos is now allowed two lines of text instead of one. Also, the Bookmarks tab is gone. It is no longer needed now that you can log in and access your subscriptions, playlists and favorites. Overall the app seemed a bit faster along with the new features. Now we just need the ability to record videos from our iPhone and send them right to YouTube!

Balls Up - Keep the Ball Off the Ground

The object of Balls Up is to keep the soccer ball from hitting the ground. You do so by tapping on the ball. I have to quote the developer on this because it is soooo true, “Balls Up is a simple game that’s easy to pick up and play but deceptively hard to master.”

This application does not need much of a description…tap the ball to keep it in the air. Though, I did find that if you tap towards the bottom of the ball you will have a little more success. Now, for as simple as this game is, I’m seriously terrible at it! I don’t know if I’m like not getting into the groove of things or if I haven’t found the perfect way to tap the ball or what but, I can’t get over 11!! Yes, 11! Then I got too frustrated and had to put it down! Then, I made the mistake of looking at the Online Leaderboard (which opens in the application) where people have a score of 400 or more! So, my competitiveness kicked in and I gave it another shot.

There are a few things I like about this application; the design is easy to look at, the ball reacts correctly when tapped and when it hits the wall, and you can see both local and global high scores which keeps you coming back for more. Personally I am not sure how long I would actually play this game or if I would come back to it more than a few times but, if you like these types of game, for $0.99 you can’t go wrong.

You will have to let me know if you master this game and what your strategy is!

It is normally priced at $4.99 in the App Store however, they are having a Mother’s Day sale right now and you can get it for $0.99 (until Midnight on Mother’s Day)!! You seriously do not want to miss out on this deal. Even you guys that have ladies who pick up your iPhone or iPod Touch and play games…you will totally want to get this one for her!

- Once launch application you'll get one big angry face and a cool face at the bottom.
- At a random time, the angry face will turn into a happy face.

RailWater is a piping game where you place the correct joints together to match the number and letting the water move through.

During the game play, you will need to select a piece from the lower menu bar and drag it where you would like it. When you add a piece, it will make the water flow based on the shape of the pipe you added. You want the water to flow through all the pipes.

You can spin the pipe joints by tapping on them. However, you will also notice that at the end of each pipe there is a circle with numbers in them. The numbers also have to match each other. Example) 120/120. So, you have to use the correct pipes to subtract the correct amount of points as well as have the water flow through all the pipes!

Reset

To reset your iPod:
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Tip:
- If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
- If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

Retry

Retry your iPod with a different USB port on your computer, not a USB port on your keyboard or hub.

Restart

Restart your computer, and make sure that you have the latest software updates installed.

Note:
- To update your Windows software, select Windows Update from the Tools menu of Internet Explorer.
- To update your Mac OS software, select Software Update from the Apple menu.

Reinstall

- To update and reinstall your iPod software, first download the latest version of iTunes.
- Next, open the new version of iTunes and connect your iPod to your computer.
- Select your iPod in the source list and click "Check for Update" under the Summary tab. iTunes will check to see if your iPod needs to be updated and perform the update for you.

Restore

Note: Because Restore erases all of the songs and files on iPod, make sure to back up any files you've saved on the iPod disk. All of your songs, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and games can be loaded back to your iPod provided that you have them stored in your iTunes Library.

How to restore your iPod:

For Windows:

1. Make sure you've reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.
2. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer.
3. After a few moments, it will appear in the source list in iTunes. If the iPod's display doesn't show "Connected" or "Do not disconnect" you may need to put the iPod into disk mode to proceed.
4. Select your iPod in the source list and you will see information about it appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
5. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download of the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:

- Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
- Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
- Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.
- Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.

6. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will instruct you to leave iPod connected to your computer to complete restore.
7. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
8. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

How to connect to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store at Starbucks

When you enter a participating Starbucks with an iPod touch, an iPhone, or a computer running the latest version of iTunes, you can access the iTunes Store and the Starbucks Now Playing content. To see if iTunes has arrived at your Starbucks, consult our list of participating Starbucks locations.

Connecting with an iPhone or iPod touch

Before attempting to connect to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, be sure that the iPhone or iPod touch software is up to date. Learn how to update your iPhone or iPod touch software.

You will also need to sync your iPhone or iPod touch with a computer that has an iTunes Store account set up in iTunes. Doing so will sync your iTunes Store account to your iPhone or iPod touch. All subsequent purchases you make with this device via the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store will be charged to this iTunes Store account.

When you are in a participating Starbucks, select tmobile from the list of Wi-Fi networks on your iPhone or iPod touch. To find the list of Wi-Fi networks, tap Settings and then tap Wi-Fi. Then, on the Wi-Fi Networks screen, tap tmobile to join the network.

Once you have joined the T-Mobile network, you can connect to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen and then tap iTunes. You are now connected to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and will be able to buy and download music.

To access the Starbucks Now Playing content, simply tap the Starbucks icon. From this screen you can purchase the currently playing song, any of the last 10 songs played, or songs from featured Starbucks Collections.

Connecting with a portable computer

Before attempting to view the Starbucks Now Playing content, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed.

When you are in a participating Starbucks, select tmobile from your computer's list of Wi-Fi networks. If you have a Mac, you can learn how to join wireless networks here.

Once you are connected to the T-Mobile network, you can open iTunes and access the iTunes Store to see the Starbucks Now Playing content as shown below.

Have you ever wish all your applications can be organize into a single folder? Well now you can. With the new application call 'Categories' found in Cydia, you can simpily place all your games or Utilities into a single folder on your desktop.

The app comes with a GUI configurator so that you do not have to edit text files. When you add an app to a category, it is removed from the springboard list so that it no longer shows up on the main desktop. When you remove the app from the category it is returned back to the springboard.

Creating and Deleting Categories

To create a category, load the main GUI and select "ADD". You will be asked to type the name of the category and then select an icon. Once this is done, you will need to add programs to the category to use it.

To delete a category, just tap "Edit" and then select the category to delete. Categories must be empty in order to be deleted. Therefore, you must first delete the apps out of the category before you can delete the category.

Chronus a.k.a TimeCapsule Backup Application

If anyone can remember the image on my left you should have remembered it came from one of my favourite application; Time Capsule.

Today they are back again, renamed into Chronus. Same application that was used in the past, to backup all your applications.

Chronus has been released for download on the Cydia Installer. If you have previously backed up your files with TimeCapsule in 1.x, the files that you should save and copy over to your computer are located at: /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/TimeCapsule. In the new firmware, you should put these files back to the same location.

The free version of Chronus is limited to one backup per application. If you have an old TimeCapsule serial it will work or you can purchase the app for $7.99.

IMPORTANT: Some users are having Chronus crash immediately at launch. This has been fixed and will be released in the soon coming Chronus 2.1. Chronus 2.1 will also come with some other features:
- email of backup
- backup all mode (only backups user-defined apps’s settings so it does not backup unnecessary files)
- addition of support through URL

The last feature above is probably the most exciting feature. Developers can now add support to their applications but specifying the parameters in a URL. Users will have surf to the developers’ website, click on the link and it will automatically launch Chronus and inserts all the necessary parameters. If this works out well, then there’s no need to wait for me to release a new update just to add support.

iPod touch: Wi-Fi Information and Settings

Wi-Fi Functionality

Use Wi-Fi on the iPod touch to connect to the Internet using Safari web browser, YouTube, or iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.

When you use any of these applications, iPod touch does the following in order until it is connected:

1. Connects over the last Wi-Fi network you used that's available.

2. If no Wi-Fi networks you've used are available, iPod touch will scan for Wi-Fi networks and show a list of Wi-Fi networks in range. Tap a network and, if necessary, enter the password to join. Networks that require a password show a lock icon () next to them.

3. Option to manually enter your Wi-Fi network name/SSID (if the Wi-Fi network is configured not to broadcast or be displayed to the public). If necessary, enter the password to join.

When iPod touch is connected to a Wi-Fi network, the Wi-Fi icon () in the status bar at the top of the screen shows connection strength. The more bars you see, the stronger the connection.

Wi-Fi Settings

1. Turn Wi-Fi on or off.

Choose Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on or off.

2. Set iPod touch to ask if you want to join a new Wi-Fi network.

When you are trying to access the Internet, by using Safari or YouTube for example, and you are not in range of a Wi-Fi network you have previously used, this option tells iPod touch to look for another network. iPod touch will display a list of all available Wi-Fi networks that you can choose from. Networks that require a password appear with a lock icon ().

If "Ask to Join New Networks" is turned off, you must manually join a network to connect to the Internet when a previously used network is unavailable.

Choose Wi-Fi and turn "Ask to Join Networks" on or off. If you turn "Ask to Join Networks" off, you must join networks manually.

3. Join a Wi-Fi network manually.

Choose Wi-Fi, wait a moment as iPod touch detects networks in range, then choose a network. If necessary, enter a password and tap Join. Networks that require a password appear with a lock icon.

4. Make iPod touch forget a network, so that the device doesn't join it automatically. Choose Wi-Fi and tap the arrow () next to a network you've joined before. Then tap "Forget this Network."

5. Connect to a closed Wi-Fi network (an available Wi-Fi network that isn't shown in the list of scanned networks). Choose Wi-Fi, then tap Other and enter the network name. If the network requires a password, choose Security, tap the type of security the network uses, and enter the password. You must already know the network name, password, and security type to connect to a closed network. Some Wi-Fi networks may require you to enter or adjust additional settings, such as a client ID or static IP address. Ask the network administrator which settings to use.

6. Adjust settings to connect to a Wi-Fi network

Choose Wi-Fi, then tap the arrow () next to a network.

Note: Many Wi-Fi networks can be used free of charge, and some require a fee. To join a Wi-Fi network at a hot spot where charges apply, in most cases you can open Safari to see a webpage that allows you to sign up for service.

iPod touch: Basic Troubleshooting

If the screen is blank or shows a low-battery image
iPod touch is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it. For information about charging iPod touch, see "Charging the Battery" in the iPod touch Features Guide.

If iPod touch doesn't appear in iTunes or you can't sync iPod touch
- The iPod touch battery might need to be recharged. For information about charging iPod touch, See "Charging the Battery" in the iPod touch Features Guide.
- If that doesn't work, disconnect other USB devices from your computer and connect iPod touch to a different USB 2.0 port on your computer (not on your keyboard).
- If that doesn't work, turn off iPod touch and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPod touch for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
- If that doesn't work, restart your computer and reconnect iPod touch to your computer.
- If that doesn't work, download and install (or reinstall) the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes.

If iPod touch won't turn on, or if the display freezes or doesn't respond
- iPod touch may need charging. See "Charging the Battery" in the iPod touch Features Guide.
- Press and hold the Home button for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
- If that doesn't work, turn off iPod touch and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPod touch for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
- If that doesn't work, reset iPod touch. Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If iPod touch continues to freeze or not respond after you reset it
- Reset iPod touch settings. From the Home screen choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. All your preferences are reset, but your data and media are left untouched.
- If that doesn't work, erase all content on iPod touch. From the Home screen choose Settings > General > Reset > "Erase All Content and Settings." All your preferences are reset, and all your data and media are removed from iPod touch.
- If that doesn't work, restore the iPod touch software. See "Updating and Restoring iPhone or iPod touch Software."

If iPod touch isn't playing sound
- Unplug and reconnect the headphones. Make sure the connector is pushed in all the way.
- Make sure the volume isn't turned down all the way.
- Music on iPod touch might be paused. From the Home screen tap Music, tap Now Playing, then tap ▶.
- Check to see if a volume limit is set. From the Home screen choose Settings > Music > Volume Limit. For more information, see the iPod touch Features Guide.
- Make sure you are using iTunes 7.4 or later (go to www.apple.com/itunes). Songs purchased from the iTunes Store using earlier versions of iTunes won't play on iPod touch until you upgrade iTunes.

Dames 1.0 iPhone Cydia Checkers Game

A new game, 100% Italian, entered into our repository and Cydia installer 4.

These Dames developed by Andrea Corsini, a user iSpazio. As you can guess from the name, is a game of Checkers with two different modes of play "Match" (single) and "Double" (to play in 2).

In launching a new game, we can choose the degree of difficulty (easy, medium, hard), the type of chess (in wood, marble, grass or steel) and the color of the pieces (white or black).

The quick start instead allows us to start a new game "Random", or with settings automatically adjusted by the application. There are rules of the game to allow everyone to just play.

Dames found in the category of Games Cydia and through the Installer repository of iSpazio.

There seems to be a problem, however, as the Italian app doesn't seem to be working for English iPhones. However, iSpazio has already taken matters into his own hands and has removed the app for now to fix the problem. He'll be re-releasing it very soon with the update.

About RSS Menu

A systemwide menu that allows you to read and organize your favourite RSS or Atom feeds.

The articles are automatically updated and you will get a notification when new articles are available or when some other event occurs.

In addition to visual notification, you can also enable speech notification and choose one of the many built in voices.

It is also possible to integrate iTunes (for podcasts) and Safari (for RSS bookmarks) with RSS Menu.

Iphone: Aurora Feint

Aurora Feint can be found at app store and download for free HERE. Almost similiar to Bejeweled all of us played in the past but this has much much more better in terms of graphics and gameplay. Pretty addictive to gamer like me espically it plays like Bejeweled !!

Using 1st Gen Iphone firmware 2.0.1 might be causing some bugs, the second time i ran the game it just crashed after 2-3 sec into the game. I thought its the out of memory issue but after surfing around i found this forum HERE where they teach you how to fix the crash bug, apparently they claim to be the sound track in the game that caused the crash.

Other than some bugs this game is just great !!! 1 vote from me !!!

Did you know that your Mac can read aloud to you?

Mac OS X Leopard includes a cool Text to Speech function that makes the Mac speak selected text in text-based files — including web pages, email messages, spreadsheets, calendar entries, PDFs, text documents, Finder windows, and even iTunes.

Note that Text to Speech differs from VoiceOver, which provides more comprehensive control of speech and enables the blind or those with low vision to use a Mac.

Also, some applications that come with Mac OS X Leopard — including Mail, Calculator, and Chess — and some other Mac programs, such as FileMaker Pro, are “self-speaking” and provide speech capabilities that you can configure independently of the Text to Speech System Preference.

You don’t have to be a magician to make your Mac speak. In fact, the ability to speak text in email messages, Pages documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, and other text-based files is built in to every Mac. You turn it on in System Preferences, where you’ll find all the Text to Speech options made available to you in Mac OS X Leopard. You can read about them in the latest Pro Tip.
